Windows 11 2024 Update: Key Changes and New Features You Need to Know

November 26, 2024/News

While Windows 12 didn't materialize this year, Microsoft's annual update to Windows 11 (this time called version 24H2) delivers plenty to get excited about. From an enhanced Copilot experience to improved security and phone integration, this release brings meaningful upgrades for both AI-ready and standard PCs. Let's dive into what's new and noteworthy in this major update.

What's Different About This Update?

If you've been through Windows updates before, you'll notice this one's a bit different. Unlike the previous 23H2 update, this is a complete platform refresh that replaces your existing Windows installation rather than simply modifying it.

Already running on the latest Copilot+ PCs since June, this update started rolling out to everyone else from October 1, 2024. Microsoft is taking its usual careful approach, releasing it in waves to ensure everything runs smoothly. If you don’t have it yet and you don’t want to wait, you can grab the official Windows 11 24H2 ISO from the Windows 11 download website and upgrade manually.

One interesting aspect of this update is how it caters to different PC capabilities. If you've got one of the new Copilot+ PCs with a Snapdragon X chip and powerful neural processing, you'll get access to some exclusive AI features that need that extra horsepower (we'll dive into those shortly).

So what's new?

Let's explore the standout features in this update, from core improvements everyone gets to some impressive AI capabilities for those with the latest hardware.

For All Windows 11 PCs

A More Reliable Foundation

Microsoft has given Windows a significant under-the-hood upgrade, rewriting core parts in Rust - a programming language known for better security and performance. You'll also appreciate fewer interruptions thanks to hot-patching updates, and faster wireless with Wi-Fi 7 support.

Your Phone, Right in the Start Menu

Phone Link now lives in your Start menu. You can check your phone's battery, messages, and recent calls right there. While it's Android-only for now, iPhone support is on the way. Plus, you can now drag those pinned Start menu icons straight to your taskbar.

A Friendlier File Explorer

File Explorer gets some practical upgrades that make everyday tasks smoother. Right-click menus now show clear text labels instead of just icons, making it easier to find actions like Copy and Delete. Built-in support for TAR and 7z files means you can handle more compression formats without extra software. Although it needs to be said, you can't password-protect archives you create this way. Lastly, you can now edit PNG metadata directly, and browser-style tabs let you duplicate windows with a quick right-click - perfect for managing multiple folders at once.

A More Natural Copilot

Copilot feels less intrusive - it's now a regular app you can move around and resize, rather than being stuck to the side of your screen.

Exclusive to Copilot+ PCs

The biggest features in this Windows 11 release are mostly centered around the new AI capabilities, so let’s see what those are.

Windows Recall

Recall is essentially a personal time machine for everything that crosses your screen. It runs quietly in the background, capturing snapshots of everything you do - from documents and web pages to photos and videos.

The real power comes from natural language search. Instead of clicking through folders or remembering file names, you can simply describe what you're looking for - "that dinosaur picture from WhatsApp" or "the recipe from last week's YouTube video" - and Recall's AI will find the exact moment it appeared on your screen.

Privacy is built into its core design. Recall processes everything using your PC's neural processor (NPU), keeping all data local to your device. Microsoft doesn't use any of this information to train their AI models, and you have complete control to turn the feature on or off at any time.

Enhanced Video Calls With Studio Effects

Windows Studio Effects brings AI-powered improvements to your video calls across all apps. Blur your background, fix your eye contact, or even add some fun filters - all controlled from the Control Center.

Live Captions Gets Smarter

Already a helpful feature, Live Captions on Copilot+ PCs can now translate between 40+ languages in real-time. Perfect for international calls or watching foreign content.

AI-Powered Creativity

Paint's new Cocreator feature turns basic sketches into detailed artwork using on-device AI. Draw an outline, add a text description, and choose from styles like Anime, Oil Painting, or Watercolor. A creativity slider controls how closely the AI sticks to your original sketc. While it's more of a gimmick for some users, it’s useful for quickly mocking up marketing visuals or transforming rough concepts into polished graphics. While standard Windows 11 PCs have basic AI image generation, Copilot+ devices handle all processing locally for better performance.

A Turning Point for Windows

While not branded as Windows 12, this update marks Microsoft's most significant platform update in years. The combination of core improvements and AI integration suggests a fundamental shift in how we'll interact with our PCs. In other words, the future of Windows may be less about version numbers and more about continuous, meaningful evolution.
